Dr. Jean Goldenbaum is composer, doctor in musicology, educator and social and political activist. He works as a lecturer and researcher at the 'European Center for Jewish Music' at the 'Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover' (Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media) and is the artistic director of the 'European Centre for Jewish Music Ensemble'. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1982 and began his musical studies at the age of ten, through piano and guitar lessons. At the age of 21 he decided to dedicate himself entirely to Musical Composition. Moving to Germany, he studied at the 'Universität Augsburg', receiving in 2013 his PhD in Musicology and Musical Pedagogy.
His music has already been performed in several countries around the world: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Paraguay, Sweden and United States. In 2010, he had his first symphony premiered and recorded in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Symphony of the Good. Goldenbaum was the composer-resident of the 'Wasa Sinfonieta Music Festival - FIRSC' in Finland in 2011 and 2013, having in those occasions premiered his double concertos Ode to Friendship (for flute, guitar and orchestra) and The Universe shall conspire to Love (for flute, percussion and orchestra). In 2011, some of his chamber works were presented at the event 'Neue Musik International' in Salzburg, Austria. In 2012, sponsored by the 'Ministry of Culture of Brazil', his oeuvre was the center of the event 'New Sounds from Brazil - in Portrait: Jean Goldenbaum', again in Salzburg, in which it took place the European premiere of his concerto May all dictators fall (for guitar and guitar ensemble), previously premiered in Brazil. In 2012, an important partnership took place, when Goldenbaum worked together with famous Brazilian poet Ferreira Gullar (1930-2016), which resulted in the piece Ferreira Gullar & Jean Goldenbaum: three moments in Poetry and Music. In 2014 his work Music for children - pieces to break paradigmas for young pianists to grow different and build a better world was published by LevanahPublications. In 2016, the event 'Neue Töne für das Gute - New sounds for the Good' was held in Berlin, Germany, which featured exclusively Goldenbaum works performed by eight musicians from different countries. In August of the same year Goldenbaum was the guest composer of '29. Schwäbischer Kunstsommer', in the southern German city of Irsee, where his Ecumenical Suite: in the name of Peace, Freedom and Tolerance (for choir of cappella), published by the German publisher Ikuro Edition, was premiered. Goldenbaum released four albums with some of his orchestral and chamber works, recorded both in Europe and in Brazil.
In 2017 he had his first book published, Conceptions and reflections about and around my musical work, in which he explains the proposals of his career and expresses his views on diverse subjects of the world, such as Art, Spirituality, Society, Politics and Humanism.
In 2018 Brazilian legendary pianist Eudóxia de Barros performed Goldenbaum's piece Brazilian Nostalgia on her tour for the whole year.
He holds lectures and masterclasses around the world about his musicological researches as well as about his work as a composer.
As a musicologist his fields of research are 'Jewish classical music composers', 'German Jewish Sacred Music' and 'Music in the Jewish Bible'.
Many of the concerts organized by Goldenbaum consist of charity events, a consequence of the social and political activism performed by the composer along with his career. He also performs volunteer work as a teacher and speaker and supports various causes relating to religious tolerance, freedom, and human and animal welfare.
He is a member of the Brazilian group 'Jewish Democratic Resistance', the founder of the group 'Jews with Lula' and founding member of the 'Jewish Observatory on Human Rights of Brazil'.
He is also active as a writer for different newspapers and Youtube channels in Brazil, where he writes and talks about culture, society and politics.
Goldenbaum lives in Hannover with his wife Paola and his dog Jake.
On March 31, 2020, on the day of commemoration of ten years of the debut of his Symphony of the Good, and the official beginning of his career, Jean Goldenbaum announced that he was concluding (at least for now) his activities as a composer.
